'Africa 3D' uses a mixture of 'LandSat' imagery and 3D terrain data from NASA's space shuttle to create a 3D image of any location in Africa. To create a new surface you must have a good internet connection, but once created it can be distributed on disk for use by other users without good connections. As well as creating 3D views it can be used to generate contours, cross-sections along routes, flooding simulations, and 'line-of-sight' studies (useful for designing telecommunication infrastructure). The cross-sections are useful for selecting the best routes for roads and water pipes.
'Africa 3D' is also useful for disaster preparedness since it can be used to identify areas of greatest slope and places potentially subject to flash-flooding.
The contours, routes, and other data can be exported in forms readable by GIS programs and already calibrated to the appropriate UTM projection.
